A Winter In Fall – An Amazing Experience!

Fall and Winter seasons of the year are entirely separate and distinct from each other. Fall is sort of a prelude to winter. It provides everyone living in temperate climates an opportunity to prepare for the coldest time of the year.

In the U.S. for instance, people would start changing their wardrobes, storing their summer clothes and dusting off their boxes of old and relatively new but unused winter clothing. Some older people who can afford to move to warmer places would opt to spend winter time in the said places, whereas those who have no choice for lack of affluence in life, have to struggle and learn to adapt to the situation.

The same situation  happens in plants and animals. They have have their own way of planning and saving for the “rainy days”, so to speak. Because of their natural instincts, some animals like birds during fall would start migrating to other warmer places so they can survive. While other animals like the squirrels would remain and hide in any kind of winter shelters  with their food which have been gathered during the late summer and fall seasons. Even plants too. In fall season, leaves of most of the trees wither and disappear, leaving only the trunk and branches which are most of the times covered with snow and ice during winter time.

Today, the east coast of U.S.A, experienced an unusually winter-like weather in fall time. It is a rare occurrence as normally snow fall specifically in New York does not happen, especially in the month of October, which is approximately still 2 months away from the first day of winter time which is on December 22nd. This happening may not appear strange to some but for me, there's some sort of a weird feeling. Not sure if you've read my blog in March this year, entitled “The First Taste of Summer in Spring Time….(see link http://www.myusefultips.com/?cat=439), we likewise experienced a summery feeling on the 18th of March, which was  still winter based on the 4 seasons' calendar.   Thus, for this year alone,  we have effectively encountered an early summer and an early winter! What a mere coincidence!  An amazing experience indeed!

Nevertheless, I simply loved watching the heavy snow flurries this morning falling down on my umbrella. It was beautiful to look at as they danced gracefully to the tunes of the wind and rain!

While the snow fall in NYC was pretty friendly, it was a different case in other parts of the east coast which were badly hit by a powerful snow storm.

In any case, for whatever scientific explanations there might be  about the said rare occurrences, let's just hope that it  yields positive results for all of us.

Based on weather forecasts, the temperature in the days ahead would be normal again, hopefully in its 50s!

Take care  everyone and enjoy your Halloween night!

A First Look At The “Ber” Months: Tips and Thoughts

“Irene's” alarming sojourn's to the East Coast this week provided me at least a brief respite from the daily norms, specifically giving me adequate time to sit down in front of a television closely monitoring on the whereabouts of the slow-moving hurricane. I felt I was like Governor Christie of New Jersey and NYC Mayor Bloomberg who were ever visible on camera and ready to give updates, advices or even stern warnings to their respective constituents, particularly those to be potentially hit and affected by the so-called hurricane, which surprisingly have been downgraded by several notches when it hit the ground. Was there a lapse in judgment from the weather forecast experts side? Or was there an overkill on tv coverage from the local media, which elicited viewers like me to react to a higher degree! Regardless of the reasons, it is sad to see that there were some families who were not able to escape from Irene's “bittersweet” lashes and for them, I would like to express sympathy to those who have lost lives and uninsured properties and still picking up the last recoverable pieces of their personal belongings.

The said long week-end likewise afforded me the opportunity to ponder on future courses of action of my blogging activities, as I had this mixed feelings, for the second time, of more disappointments and less satisfactions. Nevertheless, the graces received and the many wonderful activities that are still in the pipeline gave me specifically (thanks to my very few and close colleagues' help) the needed “push” to go on and which urged me go back to the computer and start hitting the keys of the keyboard. What is amazing though is that when I started writing, the thoughts in my head kept on working, just like a time clock machine and it only stopped when everything was used-up!

The first thought that came randomly to my mind is about the remaining (4) “ber” months of 2011. The months of September to December are the critical paths in completing all of the pending projects for the year. The initial part of the “ber” months for instance, the month of September could be the time for any forms of preparation, a time for planning and formulation but a time for merry making as well. It is the period when people starts to save money from the early perks and bonuses while at the same time spending it for the upcoming holidays in a row, from Labor Day, Columbus, Halloween, Thanksgiving, Christmas, up to New Year's Day.

Effectively, the month of September likewise kicks off the spending habits of some families and embracing new life for some of us.  The kids during these times would brag among themselves about their Halloween costumes, fun stuffs, and the potential gifts and presents they would receive from their parents and god parents, especially on Christmas day. For some U.S.-based incoming freshmen college students, it could be their first time to be away from their families and a time to look for a place to stay in or outside the university campuses, be it a first class dormitory/condominium for the elites or a cockroach and bed bug infested areas for the struggling middle class and the have less. It is the time for them to meet new school chums who could probably  put a degree of influence on their choices and preferences which may or may not jeopardize their values in the long run.

The month of September for some of us would gradually prepare us to be fit for cold season after experiencing the heat of summer. For those who tend to be on  the “gainers” (fats measurement) side, we start to be conscious of our weights and push ourselves to follow a certain diet and exercise so as to achieve the needed curves and abs and get rid of the “beer” bellies and  to acquire that opportunity to fit in the much-longed-for get-up for the party holidays. The cooler “ber” months is an opportune time to fall in love during the fall season, spend alone with someone special, and possibly tie the knot for those into serious relationships during the winter season! Hmmmm.

In the corporate world, we expect to see busy bodies during the “ber” months as everyone is engaged to complete the tasks before the year ends. High level meetings are scheduled to discuss on what has been accomplished and what remains to be done. Big heads of large organizations will hold briefings to launch their preliminary annual or development reports focusing on global outlook and economic recovery. The “ber” months is also the period where offices and businesses will prepare the required year-end financial statements, annual reports, and operational budget for the succeeding year. Although there are some of them who will attempt to massage the figures so as to avoid paying huge taxes and related fees for the period covered.

Regardless of our status in life, each and everyone of us has agenda and priorities. As such, undertaking the same with a big bang at the end of the year is something laudable, particularly so when we have successfully overcome the obstacles along the nodes of the critical paths. But we all know that in any quest for success, we may have to encounter certain hitches along the road and that is part of the game. What is deemed important is that we were able to weather any storm or hurricane, have moved on and tried our best to the very least to reach the apex of whatever we want to achieve for the year.

The Scenario

Normally girls from the West, in their teens and tweens (early 20’s), look forward to Halloween celebrations either as “treaters-or trickers’, movie or party goers and that they really crave and look for  the scarriest event in town! In our case, the rehearsal cum birthday cum Halloween party may not be the spookiest for 2010 but it turned out to be a riot and the wackiest ….camera clicks and flashes were unstoppable! I was amazed at the support of all the cast lists, especially the host, she was like the life-of-the party girl! It made the party a blast! That was indeed a real surprise…. hard-core camera conscious guys and gals. I didn’t know the atmosphere could be that warm and friendly! Hooray!

Here take at look at what really happened and let me know your thoughts:

The Climax

As we always take into account  "professionalism" to everything we do, the party ended with the rehearsal called upon by the captain of the ship….the piano virtuoso of the group. But hey, even if he was already “steering the wheel”, the other passengers were still giggling away their weaknesses, so to speak…..cameras kept on clicking!

That was indeed real fun….we enjoyed being teens and tweens once again, just like some of us in the group!

A Trick or Treat?

Unlike in developing economies wherein majority of the people are struggling to make ends meet, Halloween fun is considered big deal for most of the kids and teens in developed countries like the United States. Lots of halloween hullabaloos (e.g. events, parties, products) about the holiday are being advertised via the tri-media prior to the Halloween night, held in the evening of October 31st , mainly to entice customers into buying or patronizing related products. Some people would then either buy Halloween stuffs, from decors to food, for their homes or trick-or-treating for kids or throw Halloween parties for family and friends. Due to consumer demand, malls and stores would supply the needed things by displaying wide array of Halloween decors, which by the way have likewise evolved through the years, as to colors, sizes, designs, shapes, brands and prices.

This is where commercialization plays a role in shaping the spending habits of people during holidays, be it Halloween, Thanksgiving, Hanukkah, and Christmas. The said holidays nowadays are pretty much highly commercialized, i.e. products are offered on sale, stores are decorated according to holiday theme (e.g. carved pumpkins and skeletons with cobwebs for Halloween), and pre-made costumes (e.g. princesses stuffs from Disney stores) and special candy or chocolate are made widely available, leaving the spirit or the real essence of the particular holiday being forgotten.

Despite the foregoing, Halloween preparations in NYC are definitely felt and visible. There are a couple of homeowners who go out of their way to buy stuffs for Halloween decors, and lots of candies for trick-or-treating where kids in their best pretty or monster like costumes would normally go door-to-door in their neighborhood. My experience last year was a bit disappointing. I placed my favorite handcrafted basket with full of candies, from chocolates, small toys, lollipops, and wide variety of hard and soft candies at the doorstep and placed a note for them to pick some. To my dismay,  a group of teens got all of it, brought along the entire stuff together with my favorite large native basket! They’ve tricked me all along!

Incidentally, while on my way home today, I had the opportunity of taking snapshots of interesting outdoor household spooky decors in my neighborhood such as skeleton crafts, graveyard fun, ghosts, and other scary things. Here, take a peek:

Whether it’s a “treat or a trick”, I see nothing wrong with participating in any Halloween events for “fun” purposes and especially if one has the means for it. However, it would be prudent to consider the spiritual significance behind it. I don’t intend to elaborate on the origin and history of Halloween, but the fact and the reality that Halloween for majority of Christians, like most of us, is being celebrated on the eve till the wee hours of November 1 which is the feast of All Saints Day, and that the following day is the Feast of All Souls Day, parents may start considering teaching their kids about the relevance of commemorating the said Feasts.

As such, one can celebrate Halloween simply and not overdoing it. After the Halloween fun, parents may then teach their kids to honor and ask intercession from the Saints and the next day, November 2 is the All Souls day, where they should find time to pray for dead loved ones so they can be with God in Heaven forever and that is what is more important. In this way, kids can be treated to a fun celebration, e.g have more candies and games and at the same time they can be informed of the more important concerns about Halloween!

Have a fun Halloween night!
