Boracay:The ParadiseTo Beat! – My Second Day

I woke up the next day looking forward to having a glimpse of the beach at daytime as it was getting dark and raining when we reached the island the other day. Note that in tropical islands like those in the Philippines, weather can be erratic and unpredictable, and so I was skeptical of the events that would be in store for the Boracay visitors at this time of year. When I rushed out of the hotel room, I was glad to see the morning sun smiling; its beaming rays extended to the hotel’s veranda made me smile too! I thought it would be a great time to plunge into the beach waters knowing that it could be hot and humid all day!

The hot native “tsokolate eh” or the “chocolate e” (heavy hot chocolate) served during the buffet breakfast literally perked up my day! It tasted like real chocolate (lol)!

(Note: Photos below are for exclusive use of www.myusefultips.com only.  Hence, no reproduction is allowed!)

After having the complimentary buffet breakfast (yum, yum, yum !), we proceeded directly to the beach which was only a few steps away from the hotel’s dining area.

It was truly relaxing and refreshing to see the beach so close and feel the warmth of the sand and water. I had to remove my Brazil-made havaianas slippers so I could soak my bare feet into the wet white sand along the shore. The sand’s powder white/soiled white were soothing and the beach was astonishing! It was very colorful, the sea water looked like a rainbow from afar but only thing, it had no shades of red and orange colors. However, the yellow, green, blue, violet and indigo shades were evident. The light greens and yellows could be seen in the shallow waters, while as I looked from afar to the depths of the sea, the light blue, light violet, indigo and dark blue hues were somewhat manifested; as the sea waves moved, the colors changed. Was I hallucinating? I don’t think so. You have to experience it to believe me!

Along the sides of the beach were coconut trees which to me served a number of useful purposes: e.g. beautification, protection from the angry sea waves as the sturdy trunks of the trees block the latter when it ferociously crash the beach, and most of all it also could serve as a romantic spot for lovers and honeymooners to spend under the shady tree! Hmmm, day dreaming!

Perhaps, I am one of those from tropical countries surrounded by oceans and seas who is still reluctant to swim. Seriously, I merely immersed myself into the shallow waters, bending my knees and treading the waters by moving my arms, really couldn’t swim, not even a dog paddle. Poor me! Know why? I acquired this semi-phobia of seas and oceans, I almost drowned during my childhood. But I overcame such fear factor and that’s why I still look forward going to beaches and pools.

While we were excited to embark on our swimming escapade, it started to rain. You see when it rains and is accompanied by winds, small sea waves are being formed. And that’s what really happened. It was my first time to experience being in the sea waters while raining. It was fun to play with the small waves, it was very very nice! The feeling was sort of being in a spa taking a shower with a gentle massage. The ripples of small waves was practically doing a soft rub down on my back! What a luxurious nature bath!

And so, after savoring the coolness and gentleness of the sea waters, we decided to have a walk and look for a hearty meal. We were thinking for a fresh sea food galore, which Boracay island is also known for. There are a lot of dining areas, bars and restaurants which would cook for you a variety of sea foods (e.g. crabs, lobsters, prawns, all kinds of fish, scallops, sea shells for soup, etc.) according to your preference.

However, if you are a food connoisseur and prefers to cook food by yourself, you can simply go to the public wet market and buy them directly from the fishermen or the fish vendors. There is also a Budget Mart where you can get mineral/springs/purified waters, all kinds of drinks (local and imported), personal needs and a lot more. There’s practically no problem as far as food and drinks are concerned.

Subsequently, we toured around and found all kinds of people walking and frolicking in the beach. There were families spending quality time together, football buddies, camera conscious and photo buffs and would you believe, even newly graduates with their graduation togas and caps on, had much enjoyment in the island.

Various commercial establishments already abound in the area. The shopping outlets are almost everywhere, from branded stuffs to native local wears and accessories. I have a useful tip to share with you guys. For a certain similar product for instance, you may try looking at the things being sold by local small entrepreneurs. They have these makeshift store stalls or booths located along or a few steps to the seashore where certain souvenir items, handicrafts and latest trends can be acquired at a much lower price ( with your bargaining prowess of course!) vis-a-vis those located inside the  “d’ mall”, Boracay’s commercial district.

Boracay is also famous for tattooing activities, especially for the teens and tweens and enthusiasts. You can have a henna tattoo for only a P100.00 to P400.00 ($2.50 to $10.00) which could last for weeks or a month, depending on how you handle it. However, if you are prone to or you have history of allergic reactions,  just don’t dare to have your most sought design or letters printed on your skin, it might not be advisable. There are cases where temporary hennas can cause skin allergies. Hair braiding is likewise a trend in this island resort, both for men and women.

At night, some hotels offer a fine dining with full bar and with a lounge to relax on. It is usually being set up in a makeshift tent near the sea shore. In the hotel where I stayed, a seafood dinner buffet was offered for only $14.00 per head and an additional $11.00 if you decide to have unlimited cocktails just along the beach side. Said dinner buffet can be enjoyed with an amazing music performed by local music band group wonderfully singing all music genres.

While the band was taking a break, the diners would then be entertained by fire dancers. Fire dancing is one of the many great features Boracay is known for during night time. In our case, what we saw were young boys (yes, they were boys, clothed in a girl’s wardrobe, they were actually legitimate gays!). They were probably in their late teens or early tweens and I should say experts in fire dancing, doing some acrobatic acts, creating unique backward and alternating moves, graciously dancing to the tune of pop and sometimes bohemian/middle eastern music. They went around the diners’ tables and made them feel of the heat of what they’re holding on (ooops I was not sure of the thing but I know there was kerosene poured on it). Amazing, thrilling but could be dangerous too! Even the passersby/onlookers were enticed to stop by (outside the tent) and watched the daring fire dancers, for free!

Whew, the second day was a hectic fun one! I thought the third day would plainly be strolling around the white long beach and do some window shopping mostly in the booths of the small local entrepreneurs.  Oh,  Boracay is definitely the place to be…. to beat!  See ya in my next blog!

A Spiritual Journey To Remember – Tips and Thoughts

Some people go  into a pilgrimage with the end view of uplifting and deepening their relationship with God. Each of us has our own way of doing this taking into account our religious faith, personal beliefs and traditions.

The Muslims for instance are required as much as possible and at least for once in their lifetime to make a Hajj, a pilgrimage to Mecca, a place considered holy under Islam doctrine. The same is true with Buddhists and Hindus. The Hindus believe that the Ganges River is sacred and so they visit the said place at least once a year to join in a holy ritual with the pure intentions that they will be saved and forgiven of their sins and eventually go to heaven when they die. I had also the chance to see the Ganges River and observed the ritual when I was in India years back. I remember it was getting dark when we dropped by the place on our way  to New Delhi and coming from Agra for the grandiose Taj Majal. There were chanting of prayers and songs and floating of candles and flowers on the river. Unfortunately, I was not camera conscious at that time yet and so I had no photos of my own of the said unique place and experience. (Sorry, next time maybe!)

The Buddhists have their own way of doing some sacrifices too. They engage in so-called walking pilgrimage, a backbreaking task as the said walk is not only for one day but most of the times could take months. I have read this article in one of the blogs I visited about Buddhist monks. It was very interesting as this particular monk in his twenties recounted the ordeals he had faced which he described it as one of the “most difficult things” he had done in his life. It was a 35-day walk from Nepal to India with only one bag carried on his back and detached from material possessions  and other things which could probably provide ease to the muscle and joint pains or even foot sores due to severe walking. Most of the times these pilgrimages are arduous and the pilgrims do not only offer their sacrifices for themselves but also the intentions of their loved ones, friends and for all mankind.

For Catholics, October is the month of the Holy Rosary. The Holy Rosary is one of the vocal prayers in honor of the Blessed Virgin Mary. During this time of year, some catholic pilgrims and devotees of the Blessed Mother would organize both local and international pilgrimages. Some would opt to visit nearby local churches named after Our Lady either on foot or by car and reciting the Holy Rosary meditating on the life, joys and miseries of the Blessed Mother and Jesus Christ while they were on Earth. For those who can afford to join in a foreign travel for a pilgrimage, they could participate in a group for a Marian Pilgrimage either to Holy Land or to any sacred places where the Blessed Mother is venerated and recognized as the Mother of God.

This month, our local parish community had a one-day Marian Pilgrimage to the Shrine of the Immaculate Heart of Mary in Washington, New Jersey. It is where the National Headquarters of the World Apostolate of Our Lady of Fatima is situated. The group was fortunate to have a priest (Fr. Richard M.) with them who served as the spiritual director. Having a spiritual guide is deemed important as he or she would be able to guide the group, keep them focused and walk-through them on the intent of the pilgrimage. While on the bus, the group recited and pondered on the Holy Rosary. Upon arrival, they did a meditative Way of the Cross on the hills of the Shrine and finally a Holy Mass was officiated for all the pilgrims.

( young couple who  joined the pilgrimage)

Similarly, other groups organized a Rosary Congress and one of which was held this month in North Carolina. The said congress was attended not only by Marian devotees but also those who are interested to know about the Blessed Mother's role in the Catholic faith.

Local churches have likewise celebrated the feast of the Holy Rosary this month. In  honor of the Blessed Virgin Mary, some of them especially choir groups would wear their native costumes as they considered it a special day for Our Lady, and they even took a snapshot with Her. Cool guys!

As the month of the Holy Rosary has finally ended, I hope that each and everyone of us may have a change of heart, regardless of our beliefs, and be able to realize that little or big sacrifices through prayers, meditations and pilgrimages could help not only in uplifting our spiritual life but also in our relationship with God.

A First Look At The “Ber” Months: Tips and Thoughts

“Irene's” alarming sojourn's to the East Coast this week provided me at least a brief respite from the daily norms, specifically giving me adequate time to sit down in front of a television closely monitoring on the whereabouts of the slow-moving hurricane. I felt I was like Governor Christie of New Jersey and NYC Mayor Bloomberg who were ever visible on camera and ready to give updates, advices or even stern warnings to their respective constituents, particularly those to be potentially hit and affected by the so-called hurricane, which surprisingly have been downgraded by several notches when it hit the ground. Was there a lapse in judgment from the weather forecast experts side? Or was there an overkill on tv coverage from the local media, which elicited viewers like me to react to a higher degree! Regardless of the reasons, it is sad to see that there were some families who were not able to escape from Irene's “bittersweet” lashes and for them, I would like to express sympathy to those who have lost lives and uninsured properties and still picking up the last recoverable pieces of their personal belongings.

The said long week-end likewise afforded me the opportunity to ponder on future courses of action of my blogging activities, as I had this mixed feelings, for the second time, of more disappointments and less satisfactions. Nevertheless, the graces received and the many wonderful activities that are still in the pipeline gave me specifically (thanks to my very few and close colleagues' help) the needed “push” to go on and which urged me go back to the computer and start hitting the keys of the keyboard. What is amazing though is that when I started writing, the thoughts in my head kept on working, just like a time clock machine and it only stopped when everything was used-up!

The first thought that came randomly to my mind is about the remaining (4) “ber” months of 2011. The months of September to December are the critical paths in completing all of the pending projects for the year. The initial part of the “ber” months for instance, the month of September could be the time for any forms of preparation, a time for planning and formulation but a time for merry making as well. It is the period when people starts to save money from the early perks and bonuses while at the same time spending it for the upcoming holidays in a row, from Labor Day, Columbus, Halloween, Thanksgiving, Christmas, up to New Year's Day.

Effectively, the month of September likewise kicks off the spending habits of some families and embracing new life for some of us.  The kids during these times would brag among themselves about their Halloween costumes, fun stuffs, and the potential gifts and presents they would receive from their parents and god parents, especially on Christmas day. For some U.S.-based incoming freshmen college students, it could be their first time to be away from their families and a time to look for a place to stay in or outside the university campuses, be it a first class dormitory/condominium for the elites or a cockroach and bed bug infested areas for the struggling middle class and the have less. It is the time for them to meet new school chums who could probably  put a degree of influence on their choices and preferences which may or may not jeopardize their values in the long run.

The month of September for some of us would gradually prepare us to be fit for cold season after experiencing the heat of summer. For those who tend to be on  the “gainers” (fats measurement) side, we start to be conscious of our weights and push ourselves to follow a certain diet and exercise so as to achieve the needed curves and abs and get rid of the “beer” bellies and  to acquire that opportunity to fit in the much-longed-for get-up for the party holidays. The cooler “ber” months is an opportune time to fall in love during the fall season, spend alone with someone special, and possibly tie the knot for those into serious relationships during the winter season! Hmmmm.

In the corporate world, we expect to see busy bodies during the “ber” months as everyone is engaged to complete the tasks before the year ends. High level meetings are scheduled to discuss on what has been accomplished and what remains to be done. Big heads of large organizations will hold briefings to launch their preliminary annual or development reports focusing on global outlook and economic recovery. The “ber” months is also the period where offices and businesses will prepare the required year-end financial statements, annual reports, and operational budget for the succeeding year. Although there are some of them who will attempt to massage the figures so as to avoid paying huge taxes and related fees for the period covered.

Regardless of our status in life, each and everyone of us has agenda and priorities. As such, undertaking the same with a big bang at the end of the year is something laudable, particularly so when we have successfully overcome the obstacles along the nodes of the critical paths. But we all know that in any quest for success, we may have to encounter certain hitches along the road and that is part of the game. What is deemed important is that we were able to weather any storm or hurricane, have moved on and tried our best to the very least to reach the apex of whatever we want to achieve for the year.

The Scenario

Normally girls from the West, in their teens and tweens (early 20’s), look forward to Halloween celebrations either as “treaters-or trickers’, movie or party goers and that they really crave and look for  the scarriest event in town! In our case, the rehearsal cum birthday cum Halloween party may not be the spookiest for 2010 but it turned out to be a riot and the wackiest ….camera clicks and flashes were unstoppable! I was amazed at the support of all the cast lists, especially the host, she was like the life-of-the party girl! It made the party a blast! That was indeed a real surprise…. hard-core camera conscious guys and gals. I didn’t know the atmosphere could be that warm and friendly! Hooray!

Here take at look at what really happened and let me know your thoughts:

The Climax

As we always take into account  "professionalism" to everything we do, the party ended with the rehearsal called upon by the captain of the ship….the piano virtuoso of the group. But hey, even if he was already “steering the wheel”, the other passengers were still giggling away their weaknesses, so to speak…..cameras kept on clicking!

That was indeed real fun….we enjoyed being teens and tweens once again, just like some of us in the group!
