How Powerful is People Power – A Different Perspective of Tips and Thoughts

How powerful can people power be? Can it be a means to an end?

As the old proverb goes, vox populi, vox dei, the voice of the people is the voice of God! Considering my faith in God’s power, I quite agree with the said old adage. It can be deduced in a way that some sort of Divine intervention could have played a vital role in a successful people power revolution, especially in a non-violent and bloodless scenario. This could probably be a way of God’s response to the impassioned plea of the majority of the people for help, regardless of religious conviction. As such, if God so plans for any change in any given circumstance, anything impossible will be possible. However, the possibility of success and radical change in a difficult scenario would definitely require a strategic plan and courses of action from various key players involved. Yes, it couldn’t be through prayers alone, but it has to be coupled with a prudent action.

Typically, oppressed and disgruntled people would voice out their grievances especially under a Government whose leadership is marred with corruption, greed, decades in power, economic problems (e.g. poverty, unemployment) and other related issues. Initially, these people would at first voice out their grievances in the streets or in any other venue to demand reforms in policies and even to clamor for change in the leadership of a particular bureaucracy. If demands are not heard and merely ignored for so long years however, the next reaction would normally for the more active people to go out and hold large mass protests and as a last resort to instigate and topple the leadership either through non-violent or violent means of people power revolt. That’s what had happened in certain government administrations in the past and even during historic times, and this is apparently being experienced in certain countries at present.

The recent people power revolt in Egypt, the so-called cradle of civilization, can be considered as a remarkable paradigm shift in the political sphere in Africa and the Middle East. Why Africa and Middle East? While Egypt is geographically located in Northern Africa, it has close ties with the Middle East as it shares the same customs and traditions, and likewise politically closer to the Arab World. We all know from reports in tri-media that Egypt’s people power revolt was a hit all over the world as it made its long overdue ruler, President Hosni Mubarak stepped down and relinquished his post to the military. Imagine, the people waited for 30 long years for the economic goods to come but nothing came, which persuaded them to take their hardships to the streets. Many people have been injured and some of them unfortunately offered their lives as a result of which, but in the end they won. And yes, it has been observed  that some of these people who were on the streets, especially the peace loving Egyptians, were praying and carrying their Koran, reflective of their yearning for Divine intervention.

However, the downfall of Egypt’s Mubarak may not be considered as of yet a full blown victory on the part of the public masses as the country may still in limbo as far as leadership is concerned. As such, the country’s present military management should facilitate the critical next steps particularly the holding of an official Presidential election and allow the people to exercise their right of suffrage for their desired worthy, capable and incorruptible President, if they so desire. In which case, they would be able to complete the revolt stage and realize the dreams of the people, particularly the ideal young ones, to have a President that would hopefully lead them and pave the way for the country’s economic recovery. They should make sure though that the reforms they wanted be realized and that the gains and fruits of their labor in the streets  be not squandered for nothing.

The successful people power revolution in Egypt is echoing outside its borders. Based on news reports, Libyans likewise are currently braving their way out to oust an even more long overdue Qaddafi (Gaddafi) administration of 41 years. However, it is sad to note that many have sacrificed and the numbers are rising as of to date. So, what we ordinary worldwide citizens could help in any way we can is to offer prayers for the Libyans, that the internal conflict among them will be resolved soon, particularly to put a stop to further suppression and human bloodshed. I am not pretty much of a militant type of person, as I believe there are several ways to help other than being in the large crowd, if given the option. My prayer is for the entire leadership to be enlightened and for them to realize that their oppressed countrymen have human rights that should be respected  and honored.

The same situation is happening in the neighboring countries of Egypt. People in Tunisia, Bahrain, Yemen, Lebanon, Algeria, Jordan, Syria are also facing “dark clouds” in their respective leadership. As such, protests, riots, demonstrations, and other uprising means of emotions are exploding in these countries. Why do you think these things are happening nowadays? Could there be a reason, or could it just be a mere coincidence? The on-going phenomenon could perhaps serve as a wake-up call for other bordering Middle East and African states to address the needs of their people. I understand the Saudi Arabia administration has recently decided and announced  to offer remarkable economic benefits for its citizenry such as employment assistance, interest free home loans and other related social welfare financial packages. I hope this could be a start of the happy days for these people.

The people power revolution in the Philippines was an “iconic” example of a successful non violent bloodless revolution throughout the world. People flocked through the streets and highways of the metropolis to support the call of the key leaders to bring down a 20-year running regime. The said revolution was unique as tons of prayerful mass demonstrations from all walks of life were held in various parts of the country. Considered as the only prominent catholic country in Asia,  religious leaders, priests and nuns have actively participated and were out in the streets together with the large crowd of people praying, providing food, singing and giving out flowers to the soldiers manning the military tanks, making the environment a little bit subdued and peaceful. Perhaps because of the prayers offered by everyone, the deposed President did not react violently to the vehement demands of the people for him to step down. Of course, this is aside from the pressure of certain foreign governments which made the deposed President to painfully  exit paving the way for a new and fresh administration to rule the country.

There are lessons to be learned from the people power revolution in certain countries. In the Philippines for instance, while it was relatively unproblematic and at the same time pretty successful in toppling down some of its Presidents, it has not really progressed much at all compared to its neighboring countries after a triple of people power. True, the exceptional and peaceful manner within which the Philippine people power was undertaken 25 years ago, did serve as a role model for other similarly situated economies. However, what remains and happens after the fact is the most relevant and important. Despite its success however, people power revolution is definitely not a means to an end of economic hardships. Corruption, poverty, and other major problems are eminent and its effects are still being felt by the common people in the Philippines. The rich are becoming richer, the poor ones are becoming poorer, the gap between the two classes of society is widening. This is sad to note but the poor Filipino people have still high hopes that someday they will be freed from the sufferings of poverty.

Hence, people power should be a continuing and learning process for all of us.  We should be vigilant and always on the look out for any misdoings in our respective leaderships.

With the foregoing being said, I believe that the voice of the people, from both the vocal and silent majority, may represent the voice of God for the betterment not only for the majority but for all the people, good or bad. As such, people power is an influential and powerful weapon to overthrow tyrants and it has been proven time and again. The people power with an aid of prayer power and a favorable response from God is far more valuable and effective than anything else. Prayers can move mountains and I firmly believe in this!

Feel free to send in your thoughts on this.

MyUsefulTips 1st Year Blog Anniversary – A Blessing!

In my blog entitled, “Moving Forward…” published on October 10, 2010, I resolved to go on with my blogging activities after a week’s contemplation as to whether or not to leave the blogosphere.

Indeed, time flies as today, myusefultips.com is one year old! It was just like yesterday that I was smitten abruptly by the blogging world primarily to get my thoughts out there on many facets of life which I believe should need more advocacies. That is reflective in the blog categories which cover almost the things that I most advocate for… to promote quality of life. I really had no idea that it will go this far considering the time constraints and other personal priorities. While it was fun blogging, there were times that I couldn’t even say or write a single word and that was frustrating.

Nevertheless, it has been a remarkable year for myusefultips with varied meaningful posts in a row and lots of wonderful images showcased for its readers and kibitzers out there. Hence,   how can it go wrong, how can it simply disappear in thin air? I’ve been a witness to the evolution and transformation of this blog from barely one or two readers mainly from supportive family members and friends to hundreds of legitimate and not-so legit visitors and page views from around the world! I am blown away by the support and encouragement of these people whom I haven’t met yet. You guys actually made this blog, you gave myusefultips.com the spirit, drive and the inspiration to carry on and to be a better blogger!

The one year experience taught me so many things. I realized one can contribute to make the world a better place to live in through writing and sharing experiences. It’s not easy to compose an article, definitely it takes practice, passion and vast experience to make an awesome post and perfect it. All I can say is that I’ve learned to LOVE this craft and I thought blogging likes me too!

In behalf of myusefultips.com, I would like to express my sincerest gratitude to you all, silent and vocal readers for taking time out to drop by, for visiting, liking or even "lurking" this humble web place, for commenting and scrutinizing the posts and lastly for your unwavering support!

Perhaps, I should say, HAPPY FIRST YEAR ANNIVERSARY to all of us!!! What a journey it has been! Cheers! Te amo, Je t’aime, Gua ai di, Mahal kita, Dai su ki, Kocham cie, Main tum say pyar karta hoon. Naku penda, Te iubesc, Ti amo, Saya cinta padamu, Main tumse pyar karta hun, Ani ohev otach, Ich liebe dich, Ana behibak, Tangsinul sarang ha yo, Phom Rak Khun, etc. and I LOVE YOU ALL!!!

Saranggani Congressman Stops By the Oval Office- “An Unforgettable Moment”

Eight time world boxing champion and now Congressman Manny Pacquiao (Pacman) got the privilege to step on the grounds of the White House (WH) and reportedly had a tete-a-tete conversation with President Barrack Obama with the help of his friend Nevada Senator Harry Reid. (photo from the web)

I was surfing the net to check on details of Pacquiao’s WH visit but based on reports, it appears nothing has been said much about it except for the very brief identical press releases published by certain known sports dailies. One of the highlights of the reports is Pacman’s comments such as,  “This is an Unforgettable Moment In My Life, “It was a great honor to meet the President of the United States” and that “The President is a very tall man”! It would have been exciting to see the pictures of the meeting of the two famous figures but none of which were published. There could be some protocol justifications behind it. What do you think guys?

Candidly, my friend was better off and much luckier, she was able to have a photo-op with the President………not in WH ………

but at Madame Tussauds!. See this?

Seriously, I am pretty interested in the conversation between them, specifically the pieces of advice the President gave him  as far as politics is concerned, if any. I just hope there was nothing mentioned about Pacman's plan to run as  President in the future!

Incidentally, Pacman is set to fight with Shane Mosley, an American, on May 7th at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas. So, Mosley/Pacman’s avid fans out there and boxing enthusiasts, grab now your pens and reserve the dates, either fly to the Westcoast and book for hotels for the main event (just don't forget to check on myuseful travel tips) or simply call Pay-per-view to purchase the fight event via private telecast. Now, who's your bet ?

Love Is In The Air – What’s the Big Deal?

As the song goes, Love is in the air, everywhere I look around, Love is in the air……

February 14 or Valentine’s Day (V-Day) is here once again! So, what’s the big deal?

For couples, partners and lovers, this is just the time of year where you  could have that awesome valid excuse to go out, spend money and freely express your love and affection for one another. Absoultely, it is wonderful to be in love!

For busy bodies and workaholics, the V-Day is something special, so special that it’s only this day that you get the chance to take time out and tell the person in your whole life how important they are to you! Funny but true!

For ladies and girls exclusively dating with someone, this is the chance to clamor for special treatment from your boys, otherwise dump them if they reason out or if they ask for something in return coz they’re not and they will not be your right “man” in the next phase of your life. Sorry guys, when you want to woo your girl, do it in a right way and to the best of your ability and capability!

For single ladies out there, it is okay to be single and there’s nothing wrong about it especially if you’re happy with your life. If you still have the urge to hunt someone, go out from that shell and socialize. Who knows, an all girls-night out on V-Day would be the night you've been waiting for! A prince charming may see you there or perhaps the ngiht could be even a hell full of fun than being with a male someone with so much pretense and who can’t even engage in an intelligent conversation at all. If you simply want to stay home, keep yourself productive and treat yourself with a nice book to read or go out and buy a bunch of roses and chocolates for you!

For haters of V-day, I understand what you’re going through. You may be someone who have loved and lost, just had an ugly break-up, making you cringe about “cupid” things and cynical about love during this time of year. There is nothing to fret and worry about, there are better gorgeous men waiting for you, so get out of hibernation mode!

For advocates of anti-consumerism/commercialization, this is another opportunity for you to shout to the whole world that you do respect love and commitment but loathe the negative sides of a commercialized, media-sensationalized and a fairy-tale like concept of love. With your campaign, people from greeting cards, floral, chocolates, pet owners, stuffed toy industries to restaurant, theaters, hotel and motel magnates would be pressured to start to think and have at least that social responsibility in their businesses.

For me? Yeah, what about me? Oh, my V-day would be low-key just like the previous years, see this? O_O so happy! I let the day pass greeting my loved ones sans cards and all. A mere call and a note is enough for me. Everyday is a V-day for me anyway. Being grateful and appreciating someone’s love and kindness should be done often and not only for a day. Anyway, V-day for a day will be over and what about the other days?

For all of us! Let’s be reminded that LOVE is a wonderful gift from GOD , so let’s share this gift with others and spend it in a Godly way with prudence and respect.  Happy heart's day to all!

A Momentous and Historic Event – A Personal Reflection

I thought this article would document in a way the first Filipino Mass ever performed in NY Ozone Park’s St. Mary Gates of Heaven Church’ (SMGHC), in its over 100 years of existence. SMGHC has welcomed another community to celebrate the Holy Mass in their native language, the first of which was held on December 29,2010, and the second one on February 6, 2011. It was wonderful to see all “Pinoy” parishioners flocking to the Church and celebrating the said event with some merry making and food to share after the Mass. Such occasion affirmed the Church commitment to make and feel its parishioners connected and “at home”, as if they are in their native land!

In coordination with the Diocese of Brooklyn and Queens, the Church administration has also approved the proposal to hold Mass in Pilipino or Tagalog once a month in the said Church or every 1st Sunday of the month. This is a significant milestone in SMGHC’s history and also to Filipino migrants living within the Ozone Park and the nearby Richmond Hill areas as they would now have the opportunity to attend Mass in their native tongue. A walking distance from SMHGC, the Church of the Holy Child Jesus likewise holds mass in Tagalog or Pilipino language every 2nd Sunday of the month. Thus, with this development, there would be now two Filipino masses that will be held every month within the vicinity of the said areas.

It feels great and likewise a blessing for our choir to be part of this momentous event. Our choir is relatively in its infancy stage but we hope to develop talents and add new stuffs to the group from both Churches parishioners. I could say that with the way it is presently going coupled with a sense of commitment and dedication to the service from the members, the group is pretty evolving to deliver a more vibrant, exciting and correct way of singing liturgical music despite constraints.

Presently, SMGHC has diverse parishioners with over thousands of families composing the church. It is being administered by the Missionaries of the Company of Mary, also known as Montfort Missionaries, a catholic religious congregation which originated in France in the 18th century.

Upon entering the Church edifice, I was surprised to see some unique features which make it amazingly beautiful! Personally, I was awed by the altar’s beauty and architecture with the statue of the Blessed Virgin Mary as the backdrop. It's large and spacious like a mini St. Patrick’s Cathedral in Manhattan! But of course how can I miss to mention the elevated choir loft at the left side of the church! I liked it so much especially its acoustic properties and the sound system which made the choir’s voices much better!

Fr. Richard Magararu a Montfort Filipino priest on U.S. mission played a pivotal role to make this occasion realizable and successful. So, Fr. Richard, kudos for the job well done and may God continue to bless you more with courage to preach the good news not only to your home countrymen but to all of the parishioners as well, especially those in need!
